Gilbert the Great

By: Jane Clarke

Illustrated by: Charles Fuge

Gilbert is a great white shark and from the time he was a pup Raymond the Ramora had been around. They did everything together and were best friends. Then one day Gilbert wakes up and Raymond is gone, he is very sad. Slowly with some help Gilbert learns to smile once again.

This is a wonderful and simple story that deals with the issue of loss (the word death is never mentioned) and moving on after. The text is heartfelt and easy to understand. The illustrations are simple, expressive and very appealing. It is a touching story on it’s own and provides a good springboard to open discussion of loss and death with a child.
