A travelling carnival is a strange place to grow up in but it is the only home Mars Besnick knows. The carnival though is a place of mysteries and secrets, filled with people with hidden, or not so hidden powers. Mara doesn’t think she has any powers but she gets along. In this last stop though she meets a boy, Gabe Alvarado and chemistry happens. He’s not the first boy she’s been drawn to but he is the first to reach her so deeply. The more time they spend together the more Mara realises she isn’t the only one with secrets and Gabie’s family legacy could destroy her world. As carnival folk go missing, get attacked or even wind up dead Mara is determined to figure out exactly what is going on.
Set in 1982 this world is close to the one we live in, making characters and settings familiar. The mystery of the carnival draws us in, the many characters add wonderful colour to a tale that could be much bleaker without them. Mara is likeable and her hesitation about getting involved with Gabe is believable. Her determination draws you along as the darkness expands and the story unfolds. I thoroughly enjoyed the blend of mystery and supernatural.
Recommended if you like those genres.

13 Days of Midnight

thirteen-days-of-midnight
By: Leo Hunt

Luke Manchette is just like any other teenager from a broken home, he loves his mum and barely knows his dad. Unlike most teenagers his dad is sort of famous and Luke does everything he can to distance himself from the reality tv show host because let’s face it ghost hunting isn’t a cool thing. Then his dad dies and Luke discovers that he has inherited six million dollars but to get it he has to sign some papers he doesn’t understand. Signing something you don’t understand is never a good thing though and Luke finds he has also inherited 8 ghosts who would like nothing better than to be free and for that to happen Luke has to be dead. A pretty serious problem to have and one that throws his life into turmoil. He has 13 days before the ghosts will be at the height of their power and will use every dark magic trick they know to end him.
This story is intriguing. It’s dark overtones a big draw card because quite honestly there is nothing much to like about Luke. How reality and the supernatural interact is well done and makes for a more interesting tale. The addition of Elza is good because she balances Luke out even though she is a little cliched. All in all I enjoyed this book and it’s worth a look if you like ghosts stories and the supernatural.
Suggested age 10+.

Echo

This was sent to me as a reader’s copy from the publisher.9781447206828By: Alyson Noel

Daire Santos doesn’t regret saving her Grandmother’s life, even though the cost was more than she could have guessed. The balance between good and evil has shifted and the Richter family are loose in the Lowerworld. Daire and Dace have to work to gather to bring balance and healing back. The cost could be far greater than anyone should have to pay. Their destiny is tied to a prophecy and neither want the other to loose their lives over Dace’s evil brother Cade, who’s power is increasing even as Daire and Dace’s relationship deepens. It is their very feeling for each other that strengthen Cade, for his brother is the Echo tied to him in ways neither Dace nor Daire can comprehend.

Daire gains courage and strength as she accepts her role as Seeker, she becomes confident and embraces the strangeness in her life. Dace’s character is the one who goes through the biggest change as he begins to come to terms with the circumstances of his birth. The relationship between the two goes through a predictable path and that slows things down a little. Without putting any spoilers in here I will say whilst I found things to drag a bit, the ending was definitely worth reading towards and I am curious to see where Noel takes things. I think it comes down to how you read things because the very things that slowed things down are the things that added different layers to both the town and characters.

A solid follow-up to Fated and I still say it is nice to read a YA supernatural story that is a bit different.

The Skeleton Key

I received this as an ARC from the publisher.By : Tara Moss

A Pandora English book.

Friday the 13th is coming, a day for all things supernatural. Even though she knows there will be a time for the dead will rise she has other things on her mind – a date with Lieutenant Luke, Pandora believes they can have a night together where Luke is once again a flesh and blood man. It doesn’t go to plan and Luke mysteriously disappears. Pandora must figure out how to unlock the secrets of the mansion. That means delving into the past to figure out what the builder of the mansion, Dr Edmund Barrett was up to when he died and exactly what happened to him. There is a powerful force in the house, something terrible is happening and if Pandora is going to defeat it she will have to face it head on and use all those powers that are hers to command as the Seventh.

This is the third instalment of the Pandora English series. Pandora still comes across as very shallow and insipid as she stumbles through her days as fashion assistant and nights dealing with the supernatural (though much of that is her running away). This plot line is more interesting that the previous one, the threat is much bigger and somewhat more interesting.

Great Aunt Celia is becoming more and more interesting and part of me would like to know more about her. Deus also plays a bigger part and the dynamics of how he fits in are interesting. I think if you like fashion and the supernatural, you may like this book, this series, there are plenty of fashion descriptions for the fashionistas out there.

When the first book came out it was one whose place on the shelf was uncertain as it was considered a crossover title (YA or adult). Something about it’s style means it fits better in the YA category for me, though with Pandora being 19 it could be argued that the book may fit better in adult. I will leave that to your discretion. One for those interested in clothes and the like.
