Judy Moody series Bk 1
Judy Moody has plenty of moods and she starts her new school year off in a bad one. ROAR! Then her teacher gives the class a ‘Me’ collage project and Judy starts to have some fun. She knows what she wants to be but there are so many other places to fill on the collage and she doesn’t know what she is going to do to fill them. While thinking on that she has to have fun with her best friend Rocky, not go to Frank’s birthday and hope her brother Stink doesn’t ruin everything.
A fun read about the important things of being in grade three. And she learns a few things as well, including how your attitude can change a bad mood into a good one. There is more text and less pictures than some of the early reader books so probably suited to a reader more comfortable with reading than a total beginner.

It’s a new school year and there’s a new teacher taking her class. All Daizy Star wants is to do that thing, whatever it is, that will make her the ‘Star of the Week’. Things though aren’t really going Daizy’s way. Her friends are getting interested in boys and her Dad has announced that he’s quit his job so he can build a boat and sail around the world with his family. This turns her world upside down, she can’t swim and she can’t even tell her best friends about it. Soon things become a mess of secrets and lies. What is she going to do? And will she ever come up with something good enough to make her ‘Star of the Week’?
This is a lighthearted look at life in the year six. I laughed and cringed with Daizy and thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Percy has been booted out of many schools, things just have a tendency to go wrong around him. He has ADD and dyslexia but is about to discover that that is the least of his problems. His teacher is a centaur, another teacher is trying to kill him and his best friend (Grover) is a satyr.
It turns out that Percy Jackson is a demi-god, not just the son of any god but the son of Poseidon and Zeus isn’t happy. he thinks Percy has stolen his lightening bolt.
Now Percy has to negotiate his way around Camp Half-Blood, avoid the bad guys – who have stepped right out of the pages of a mythology book, find who has the bolt and return it to Zeus before all hell breaks loose.
This is the first of the Percy Jackson books and I loved it. It moves at a fast pace which makes it a good choice for both avid and more reluctant readers.
Possibly more suited to readers age 10+, there are battles and as such violence. Appeals to girls and boys alike.

Pearlie is a park fairy, it is her job to look after Jubilee Park and it keeps her very busy. She makes sure that everything happens that is supposed to happen, she even has a list so she doesn’t forget. Then one morning she wakes up to find everything is all wrong. Pearlie needs to find out what happened and make things right again.
A fun read with a format that makes it a great choice for a book to bridge the gap between picture books and first chapter books. There are enough words to be interesting, bold colourful pictures and is a size closer to chapter books. It is also one of the few that you can find in this section that has colour illustrations. Though with all the pink it will probably appeal more to girls, though there are some male and bad characters.
