Goth Girl and the Wuthering Fright

I received this book from the publisher
goth-girl-and-the-wuthering-fright
By: Chris Riddell
Book 3 in the Goth Girl series.
Ada Goth is the only child of renowned writer Lord Goth and she lives at Ghastly-Gorm Hall. Ada is a smart girl, rather self reliant and is looking forward to seeing her father who will be home for Christmas. The other thing happening at the hall for Christmas is a literary dog show. Famous authors from all over will be bringing their beloved pets to the hall to see which one deserves the title best in show. Ada though is also excited for the fact her best friend will be coming back to the hall for the holidays.
Things don’t really go as planned though as strange things start to happen; howls in the nights, shoes that have been chewed and mysterious paw prints. Something is going on and Ada is determined to figure it out as well as having some fun along the way.
A wonderfully enchanting tale, filled with absurdities that are Riddell’s signature, accompanied by his distinctive and quirky illustrations. Ada is a steady, relatable character in amongst the slightly off centre story and supporting cast. Riddell’s books are always entertaining, a real pleasure to read, picture books to chapter books. A truly fun read.
Highly recommended.

Christmas Story Clips

It’s less than a week until Christmas and I’m in the festive spirit so I thought it would be a good time to share a few videos of Christmas stories. All of these tales can be found in book form for you to share with your little ones.

Firstly because I come from the southern hemisphere where it’s hot.

Now for something a little more traditional.

Mouse’s Christmas Wish

By: Judi Abbot

Mouse wishes to spend christmas with his friends, so when the invitation arrives, he is very excited. He has so much to do before he can go though and somehow things keep going wrong. While his friends travel from all over and arrive at Rabbit’s Mouse experiences one disaster after another. Will he ever get his christmas wish?

This is a beautiful little story about christmas and friendship. Mouse is an adorable little character whom you can’t help but like and feel sorry for. The illustrations are simple, bold and appealing. For a nice christmas story with the focus away from presents and santa this is a choice well worth looking at.

Just Right

By: Birdie Black

Illustrations: Rosalind Beardshaw

Christmas is a time of sharing and giving and this story is more about one piece of cloth than any particular character. The story is the journey of the cloth from a large piece and the gift commissioned for a princess by a king, down to the smallest of left over pieces used to make something for a little mouse. These gifts are made from the heart and this is a beautiful tale about the spirit of giving. The illustrations are simple, subdued in tone and really work. Reading this made me feel like going and hugging my kids. A lovely simple tale with heart.

Oh What A Christmas

By: Michael Garland

Santa is heading out to do what it is he does every Christmas Eve, deliver presents to all the good girls and boys. Then disaster strikes. The reindeer and the sleigh get separated and Santa crash lands into a barn. With no reindeer to fly the sleigh how will he be able to deliver the presents? When a dog, a pig, a goat, a horse, two sheep and two cows come out to investigate, Santa gets a great idea.

This is an enjoyable little spin on a Santa story. It is full of many of the Christmas staples – presents, helping hands (or animals in this case) and Santa over coming a problem. The illustrations are kind of fun and everything seems rounded and jolly. Yes it is another Christmas picture book but it is a sweet little story so if you are sick of reading the same ones over and over this is worth a look.

Christmas Wombat

By: Jackie French

Illustrated By: Bruce Whatley

Wombat is still very busy sleeping in and eating carrots. This time she finds a new and unexpected windfall of her favourite orange vegetable. The abundance comes with a hitch in her plans as she comes up against a strange new creature – a reindeer and ends up going on rather a long trip.

This is a wonderfully fun addition to the Wombat series. The text is perfect for the very young, simple and fun. The illustrations are bright in keeping with the season and charming in keeping with Whatley’s unique and appealing style.

An enjoyable and distinctly Australian story with a christmas theme.

Aliens Love Panta Claus

By: Claire Freedman and Ben Cort

Those underwear loving aliens are back and this time they want to spread their joy around. They head to the North Pole to give out many different and wonderful types of pants. Then something goes wrong and it is up to the aliens to help Santa Claus.

Another fun book with those silly aliens. Staying true to form the text rhymes, the story is simple, silly and as always entertaining. Cort’s illustrations perfectly capture the silliness of the story and are bright, bold and appealing. Fans will love it and if you are looking for a Christmas book with a bit of a difference then give this a try.
