Thea Stilton and the Ghost of the Shipwreck

By: Thea Stilton

Thea Sisters series bk 3

Years ago the Queen Mousy sank off the Whale Islands, taking with it a treasure that included an enormous diamond called Jasmine’s Heart. Move forward in time to when the Thea Sisters are worried because their biology professor has disappeared. In the process of finding him they discover he has found the wreck and now someone else is trying to steal the treasure he was trying to preserve. This is only the first of the precious stone mysteries the Sisters have to help with. When they travel to China they end up searching for a missing treasure that once belonged to the Jade Princess. Will they be able to stay out of evil Madame Hu’s paws long enough to find the treasure?

Another fantastic Thea Sisters story. Full of danger, adventure and mystery. The story itself is intriguing enough to keep young readers engaged, the colour illustrations and presentation keep it visually interesting but not overwhelming. You’ve got to love a book where five strong, independent females make up the core ensemble of characters. Or at least I do. As an added bonus you find lots of little educational tidbits scattered throughout the book which lends a little reality to the fantasy. These books are incredibly popular and I believe for a very good reason. Highly recommended.

Geronimo’s Valentine

By: Geronimo Stilton

Geronimo Stilton series bk 36

It is Valentine’s Day and Geronimo is nervously looking forward to his date with the very special Petunia Pretty Paws. Before he can get there though he is hijacked by some horrible hijinks and it doesn’t look like his Valentine’s Day is going to turn out too well. Then his friend and private investigator, Hercule Poirat convinces Geronimo to help him investigate The Cheesecake Mystery. Will Geronimo be able to help Poirat? Will he be able to eat all that cheesecake? Will Petunia Pretty Paws ever speak to him again? Well I’m not going to tell you, you’ll have to find out for yourself.

Another mystery and disaster filled addition to the wonderfully fun Geronimo Stilton series. Geronimo continues to attract disasters and while his life doesn’t seem to run too smoothly it usually turns out alright in the end. These  stories are entertaining, a pleasure to read. The colourful visuals that fill the pages suit the series well and are part of the appeal of these books. Just so you know they can be read in any order for Geronimo introduces himself each time, and they are popular with girls and boys.

Rascal the Dragon

By: Paul Jennings

Ben loves dragons. He loves playing with the dragons in the street but he really, really wants one of his own. Dad isn’t so willing. He finds something wrong with every single one of them. Then Ben finds a little stray dragon and calls him Rascal. he takes him home but is there anything Rascal can do to make Ben’s dad say yes?

A gorgeous little book about a seemingly natural pairing of boys and dragons. One or two sentences of easy text on each page makes this book, and the rest of the series, ideal for beginning readers in it’s smaller format or as simple picture books in the larger format. Both are accompanied by the amazing and somehow 3d looking, bold colour illustrations.
