The Soul Seekers series bk 3

Daire Santos tried to kill Cade Richter but things didn’t go according to plan and she finds herself separated from everyone she loves, she is in the Upperworld seemingly trapped. She comes up with a plan because there is no way she is going to be kept away from Dace and the others she cares about. When she finally gets back she discovers she isn’t the only one who is missing. No-one knows where Dace is and yet Cade seems to be doing just fine. As soon as she is able Daire sets out to rescue Dace and then they will see what can be done about the Richter’s, though with Cade and Dace being so connected no-one is sure what that will be.

Daire and Dace drive this story along, their love, their torment, their individual destinies, but the supporting cast are what flesh this tale out. The older characters providing wisdom and mentorship (both good and evil) and peers such as Xotichl and Lita providing support and grounding. The introduction of a third party set on the destruction of the Richters provides another level as in this case the often used plot device ‘enemy of my enemy is my friend’, simply doesn’t work here, with the destruction of one boy equalling the destruction of both.

The time Daire and Dace spent separated has changed them, it has altered their abilities and as the story progresses they start to understand to what extent these changes are. I find the integration of the spirit animals and spirit world interesting, it gives what could just be another story of good verses evil a different spin. I still look forward to finding out how Noel is going to continue this and wrap it all up.

Echo

Daire Santos doesn’t regret saving her Grandmother’s life, even though the cost was more than she could have guessed. The balance between good and evil has shifted and the Richter family are loose in the Lowerworld. Daire and Dace have to work to gather to bring balance and healing back. The cost could be far greater than anyone should have to pay. Their destiny is tied to a prophecy and neither want the other to loose their lives over Dace’s evil brother Cade, who’s power is increasing even as Daire and Dace’s relationship deepens. It is their very feeling for each other that strengthen Cade, for his brother is the Echo tied to him in ways neither Dace nor Daire can comprehend.

Daire gains courage and strength as she accepts her role as Seeker, she becomes confident and embraces the strangeness in her life. Dace’s character is the one who goes through the biggest change as he begins to come to terms with the circumstances of his birth. The relationship between the two goes through a predictable path and that slows things down a little. Without putting any spoilers in here I will say whilst I found things to drag a bit, the ending was definitely worth reading towards and I am curious to see where Noel takes things. I think it comes down to how you read things because the very things that slowed things down are the things that added different layers to both the town and characters.

A solid follow-up to Fated and I still say it is nice to read a YA supernatural story that is a bit different.

Daire has a different life to most girls her age, she know that but traveling the world from film set to film set with her make-up artist mother, Jennika, is all she has ever known. Her father died before she was born. Recently though Daire has started to see glowing people more often and has had to live through moments when time appears to freeze for everyone but her. Then comes the moment that changes everything. No-one seems to be able to give Daire answers about what is happening to her. Then from nowhere her long lost grandmother Paloma calls saying she has the answer.

Jennika is skeptical but no other options seems better so she sends Daire to live with Paloma. Daire is not happy about this but slowly she sees the wisdom in what Paloma says and realises she is able to offer Daire some things she never had. Sure the path of a seeker, which is what Paloma tells her she is, is a hard one. One fraught with danger, especially with the trickster Coyote gaining strength, but along with a new purpose Daire finds a home, somewhere to belong.

I quite liked this, Daire is an interesting character from an interesting background. She is strong and determined, both traits I like to see. Noel has delivered a great cast of characters in a fascinating setting and a power triangle rather than a romantic one. All good things. Dace is a good balance to Daire, a steadying influence. That the bad guy Cade is Dace’s twin brother brings an interesting dynamic to the story and it will be interesting to see how that develops. This was a balanced story, with mystery, paranormal elements (like spirit guides) and a touch of romance surrounding a solid good versus evil core. I am looking forward to the next book. Oh and I have to say I love Xotichl what a brilliant character, I hope there is more of her in the next book.
