Part of the Ella and Oliva series

Ella and Olivia are sisters. Ella is a little bit older and she has a plan to plant a garden. Olivia really wants to help, the sisters are very excited about doing this fun project. Once they get started though it turns out they can’t agree on anything. Will they ever be able to get the garden built and growing.

Sisters will be sisters and in amongst everything they will fight and then get over it. Or at least they do here. The easy to read and understand text make this series a good choice for beginning readers. The lesson in the story are simple, and definitely relevant to families with siblings. A nice little story.

Midnight Mischief

By: Fiona Regan

Illustrated By: Louis Shea

Part of the Double Trouble series

midnight-mischief

Tommy and Coop are super excited. They love to prank and now they get to do it somewhere they haven’t had the chance to, and it is a place that will take pranking to a whole other level. The twins are going on their first school camp. They plan on making this the best camp ever. But what happens when they aren’t the only ones pranking?

A fun addition to this series. With it’s story lines filled with silliness and humour and the accompanying black and white illustrations, this series is full of appeal. It is particularly nice in this one to see Tommy and Coop on the receiving end of a prank. An easy read with plenty of laughs for a reader that might find books boring.

Dinosaur Danger

By: Sarah Fraser

Illustrated by: Louis Shea

Part of the Double Trouble series

dinosaur-danger

Tommy and Coop are sure the class excursion is going to be boring. How can it be anything else when they are going to the museum. They try some pranks to make themselves late. Unfortunately for them they still have to go. Boring. Maybe some pranks will help them feel better. Then they discover the robotic dinosaurs. Now they can really have some fun.

This series is a lot of silliness and for some kids just the thing to get them reading. Fortunately for parents a lot of their pranks revolve around gadgets so it won’t be giving kids too many ideas. The text is simple and engaging, Tommy and Coop are the right amount of mischievous, not tipping over to malicious. A good little read.

Weirdo 2 Even Weirder

I received my copy from the publisher

even-weirder-

By: Anh Do

Weir Do has a problem, it’s his family. Nothing about them is normal and this makes life difficult especially as he has been invited to Bella’s birthday party and he doesn’t want to do anything to make himself seem even stranger. Then there is the school trip to the zoo that he has to get through first.

This book is filled with illustrations that break the text into small chunks. The language is simple and the story fun and silly. Weir is pretty easy to relate to as he struggles with his family and trying to not make a fool in front of his classmates. A book that will appeal to those just getting into chapter books and looking for something funny.

The Hunt For the Golden Book

I received my copy from the publisher.

By: Geronimo Stilton

Part of the Geronimo Stilton Series

the-hunt-for-the-golden-book

It’s ten years since Geronimo published his first book and Grandfather William wants him to throw a high party to celebrate, and he wants a special book written for just this occasion. Geronimo isn’t so sure about any of this but tries to do what Grandfather William wants. It all goes horribly wrong though when his laptop is stolen and on it is the only copy of his very special book. Geronimo has to go to extraordinary lengths to get his computer and his manuscript back.

A fun special hardbound edition. The adventure is fast paced and full of all the silliness that is expected from a Geronimo Stilton book, and many familiar characters whom you love or hate. The format works though so why change it. It remains a good serious for those young ones just starting out on their chapter book reading journey. Ten years is a worthy cause to celebrate. This version also comes with a bonus mini Geronimo adventure.

Juliet Nearly A Vet book 5

Juliet and her family are going on a holiday to the beach. Juliet is excited because there are all sorts of animals at the beach and you never know what animals may need help, that is why Juliet is taking her vet kit. When you take your own dog to the beach you never know what sort of mischief it will get up to so it’s a good thing vets are prepared for anything.

A sweet story about family, friends and holidays with plenty of information about different animals thrown in as well. The text is interesting and easy for young readers to understand. The illustrations are appealing, innocent and somehow convey exact emotions for certain moments of the story. Enjoyable stories about an interesting young girl with a passion for animals.

Geronimo Stilton

So the books have been around for ages and there are so many of them, I have a lot but not all. I think they are great for young kids, they have action, simple to understand language and plenty of colour. There is also a tv series. It is quite fun to see these favourite characters come to life this way. If you or your kids are a fan of the books then track these down (they are actually on tv in Australia at  the moment), likewise if you or your kids are a fan of the show then definitely give the books a try.

A Kick it to Nick book

The Crocs haven’t done too well this season, in fact they are yet to win a game. Nick is sure they can win this next one. That is until mutant bugs start appearing. No one will listen to him though and his attempt to keep everyone safe means he is no longer team captain. How will Nick do what needs to be done?

This is a fun little story that has football as its backdrop. For those interested in the sport there are a few specific things, like a particular thing to practice to improve your hand balling. Nick is a focussed team player, he wants what is best for his team. I also like the fact that there is a girl who plays, yay! That probably wouldn’t  have happened all that long ago, so it is particularly nice to see. The two parts of the story blend well together making it something that both football fans and horrorish fans might read.

The Boy From Snowy River

I received my copy from the publisher

By: Edwina Howard and Joe Bond

Part of the Mates series

George lives in Mumblegum and he really wants to go to Big Spills Water World but it would cost a bit of money to go. George’s grandma suggests he enter The Stockman’s Cup race at the local fair, the prize money could pay for his trip. The Cup is a horse race and they have a horse called Bandicoot that won the race more than once when it was younger, much younger. George isn’t sure it will work but to get to the theme park he’ll try anything. The race doesn’t quite go as expected.

This is a fun, modern take on Banjo Patterson’s The Man From Snowy River. There is a race, a rescue and plenty of fun along the way. The simple text, colourful illustrations and short chapters make it a perfect book for beginning readers. A great addition to the Mates series.

Secret Safari

Susannah McFarlane

EJ12

Emma Jacks and her friends are trying out for the A netball team but there is a new girl in school who seems determined to make things harder for Emma. After what she thinks is a disastrous tryout EJ has to wait until after the holidays to find out about the team. Then she discovers her mother has won a family trip to Africa. This turns out to be a cover story for another SHINE assignment. Someone has been hunting wild animals for their horns and skins and EJ has been asked to look into it.

When it appears an evil SHADOW agent is always one step ahead of her, EJ has to find a way to outwit her opponent. It is the only way she can keep the animals safe.

Emma Jacks is a smart girl, she needs to be to juggle the life of a secret agent with that of a normal girl. In some ways the agent part of her life is easier to deal with than the school side and that is a touch I like. It somehow makes her that much more relatable. The other nice thing about these books is that she doesn’t have to face everything alone. The adventures and topics are interesting. These books are great for girls wanting to catch a little of that spy action for themselves.
