Jamie’s life went to pieces the night his father was killed by the men in black body armour. He and his mother had to move more than once and he’s had trouble at every new school. Then comes the night Larissa is supposed to kill him but can’t. It’s the night his mother is kidnapped and he is rescued by a large man named Frankenstein. It is also the night he finds out about Department 19 – the government’s most secret agency.
Jamie is more involved in a battle that has gone on for generations, than he ever knew. At every turn he comes up against his father’s actions and has to prove himself because of them. He doesn’t care about the big picture, he just wants his mother back but that’s not so easy when she’s being held by one of the oldest and most powerful vampires in the world. Fortunately Department 19 has the equipment needed to find her, rescue her and hopefully survive. Unfortunately in the bigger picture something much older and more terrifying is taking place.
Department 19 is a story that unfolds over generations starting with characters you’ll be familiar with if you know your Dracula. These vampires are the sort I sink my teeth into – dark, deadly, immoral and lethal. There are plots and subplots, machinations and plenty of betrayal. Jamie is uncertain, untried and determined to do what he wants, even if it is the wrong thing. What I really like about this is the return to more traditional vampires and the twist of using modern warfare to fight them. I also like the way Hill has incorporated old characters and linked them to the new. If you like your heroes flawed and your vampires bloodthirsty I think you will really enjoy this book. Yes there is some predictability, a tiny bit of romance and some moments that frustrate but overall it is a fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable read. I am looking forward to book two.
