I Don’t Want to be a Pea!

By: Ann Bonwill

Illustrated By: Simon Rickerty

Hugo is a hippo who has a bird named Bella. Or is that Bella is a bird who has a hippo named Hugo? Any way they are excited to be going to the Fairytale Fancy Dress Party. The problems start when Bella decides she doesn’t want to go as the pea while Hugo goes as the Princess. Will they be able to find costumes they are both happy with, or will they end up not going at all?

The text in this picture book is basic and the story is entertaining. The illustrations are a lot of fun. A cute and silly book about friendship and compromise, a lovely little lesson should you choose to talk about it.

Bug and Bear

By: Ann Bonwill

Illustrated By: Layn Marlow

Bear is grumpy and tired, she just wants a nap, but her best friend Bug really wants to play. Every time Bear tries to get to her bed Bug thinks she is trying to play a new game. Then when Bear finally gets to her bed and lies down she discovers something is wrong.

This is a cute story of friendship and how it doesn’t always run smoothly. There is quite a bit of text making it suitable for kindy and pre-primary readers. The illustrations are stylised and simple, using muted colours they are appealing. Its subtitle is ‘A Story of True Friendship’, is apt as it portrays a moment when friends want different things, something children all need to learn to deal with.
